Nan Goldin

During the late 1970s and early 1980s Goldin's main motifs for her photographs were her friends, whom she regarded as a substitute for her family and who were very important to her. The viewer penetrates deeply into the privacy of the depicted, due to the exact titles of the photographies including name, place and date. Goldin's slide show entitled "The ballad of sexual dependency" reflects the wild everyday life of her friends.
These shows, which are added to a soundtrack of music, are particularly impressive, because Goldin adds and rearranges the slides for every show to reflect changing moods, emotions, impressions and memories.
From 1986 Nan Goldin also exhibited abroad. In 1988 she had to undergo withdrawal from drugs, during which she began with a series of self-protraits, which show an intensified affect control. The loss of several friends due to AIDS infections during the early 1990s made Goldin return to depicting other people.

Richard Billingham

The series is based around the photographers dysfunctional family, who are torn apart by alcohol and

. The book depicts his alcohiolic father (in images such as him sitting by the tioet after just being sick, below), squalid surroundings and violent interactions between the family members. It is raw footage of Billinghams’ closest family members, that shows a sometimes uneasy portrayal of their lives.

However, the images are contrasted with moments of love and happiness, and when i first went through the book from cover to cover, I was brought almost to tears of joy with the image of his grinning father lying in bed. This book takes you from despair to happiness with only a turn of the page, and is one of the most compelling photo-stories I have ever read.

Brian Griffin

Brian Griffin ‘has had a profound effect on photography in the last 30 years... he creates works of art that leave the viewer mesmerised’ (British journal of Photography).

His portraits are renowned: ‘politicians, designers, singers... all undergo a magical metamorphosis in front of Brian Griffin’s camera’ (The Sunday Times). Portraiture is an important aspect of Griffin’s work, and his diverse career has encompassed both commercial and fine art photography, film, audio-visual performance, fashion photography and books.

Born in Birmingham in 1948, Griffin studied photography at Manchester Polytechnic’s School of Photography, where he was first able to encounter a myriad of artistic movements in the college library – from the Renaissance to Symbolism, Expressionism and Surrealism. His influences have emerged from film or painting, with the lighting in German Expressionist cinema and film noir a major inspiration.

Sally Mann

Sally Mann has used her 8 × 10 view camera to capture in fine detail, among other subjects, images of her children as they mimic and act out social and familial roles in the lush landscape of their rural Virginia home. For the series Immediate Family, posed or simply arrested in their activity, Mann’s children (who often appear nude) convey both primal and playful aspects of human behavior. The images in the series and subsequent publication At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women (1988) capture the confusing emotions and developing identities of adolescent girls. Candy Cigarette is a striking example of Mann’s distinctive combination of careful planning and serendipity. In this work Mann’s daughter Jessie suspends her activity and gracefully balances a candy cigarette in her hand, the innocent miniature of a blonde and gangling twenty-something beauty. Mann’s expressive printing style lends a dramatic and brooding mood to all of her images.

all the artists shown here i feel are relevant to my idea of Looking at people in the community who that have jobs that are there help build and keep communities together And look at people who control communities and what it does to the lower class in medway. sally mann and nan goldin's work are not so  related to my idea but i looked at them because of the look there photographs have and as i hope i can use the looks the photos have to add emphasis  when it comes to showing my work. as for brian griffin i see relevance and similarities in his photographs i.e locations and the main objects being the people. with my work i will shooting in a studio

photos I've taken that I feel are relevant

Darkness in Front of Me

 I See This Coming ..

my shoot
leading up to my shoot for this project the model i had chosen had to cancel on me for unforeseen circumstances, So what I thought id do is look at people who support students with learning difficulties. After years of having support myself I thought it would be intresting to look at the support workers. After my other model could not attend, she was also and LSA I didn't have much time to find another model who done the same role, as I was only told a few day before my shoot. but after around asking other LSA's I found Nigel Adams  who has been a LSA for a short amount of time so i thought it would be good to take someone who hasn't been working in the field to long.
