My main Idea for my environment was about my sister being in hospital after being diagnosed with blood cancer and the environment in which she was cared for. For this project I wanted to go to Medway maritime hospital where my sister was cared for and shoot some of the corridors near and within the ward she was in and this would be one part of two pieces the second one being a corridor on our home to show how there can be a comparison as home being a place you can feel safe and the hospital being a place where you feel uneasy with your surroundings and frightened of what may happen to you.
For research I looked at two artists the first being nMarlene Mac Callum her pieces where based on corridors and stair cases in homes and this helped me develop my idea to shoot photographs of corridors at the hospital and at my home I was hoping to shoot in black and white as I felt using color would leave a more realistic impression and I didn’t feel ready to save the reality of what was happening to my sister. I took a trip to the hospital to do some test shoots and had to talk to a press officer at the hospital and ask permission to take photographs but she said I couldn’t on that day so she arranged to meet with me on the Friday of that week. It come to Friday and got to the hospital to be told the press officer wasn’t in so I couldn’t shoot, as she had to escort me around the wards. But to make things worse I had forgot to load up my dark slides with negatives.

My concept for this unit is in relivance to the civil war in Lybia and the torture and the militant lifestyles the people there live. When I thought about what object would translate this specific concept I thought about fire arms, I asked a member of staff and I was unable to bring in live grenades and was unable to do so, so I decided to bring in a gas mask, I felt that still conveyed the concept of warfare in Lybia
For my research I watched a lot of news and read a lot of articles in the papers, I looked at artist such as Annie Leibovitz’s war photography and Seamus Murphy war images and portraits I wanted to look at these artist because they all looked at the morbid side to war and the out come it has on civilians in the country. When I viewed these artists work I mainly looked at the objects with in the images. Especially the objects that is patriotic within the scene. When it came to shooting my final image I used a white backdrop against the black gas mask, to make the gas mask seem more defined, the reason for only having one object is because I felt it said more on it’s own than were it to be placed with other objects.
